The True Essence of Eid-ul-Fitr

In this day and age, many Muslims eagerly await the end of Ramadhaan and the coming of Eid-ul-Fitr to gain their ‘freedom’ in order to go back to committing sin and disobeying Almighty Allaah. Many people start on the day of Eid itself and engage in shameful and reprehensible behaviour in the name of celebration. We should remember that celebration does not mean committing sin, but rather it involves remembering Allaahu Tha'alaa and being grateful to Allaahu Tha'alaa for showering His Mercy and Bounties upon us. Let us look at the true essence and significance of Eid-ul-Fitr, and the way in which those pious servants close to Almighty Allaah celebrated Eid.

Eid is a day of celebration for Muslims, a day of happiness. On this day, Muslims perform two rakaats of prayer, meet one another, shake hands and embrace and give charity to the poor and needy. Islam teaches protecting the poor, helping the helpless, and easing the pain and sufferings of orphans and the meek at every turn, and they should not be forgotten, especially on the day of Eid. That is why Rasoolullaahi (Sallallaahu Alaihi Wasallam) ordered us to pay the Sadqa-e-Fitr before performing the Eid Salaah so that Muslims remember their poor brothers on this occasion and include them in their happiness.

It is reported on the authority of Hazrath Anas (Radhiyallaahu 'Anh) that when Rasoolullaahi (Sallallaahu Alaihi Wasallam) came to Madina Shareef, the people of Madina would celebrate two festivals. They were asked what these days were and they replied, “We used to celebrate on these days in the days of ignorance.” Rasoolullaahi (Sallallaahu Alaihi Wasallam) said, “Allaahu Tha'alaa has granted you two better days than these days; Eid-ul-Fitr and Eid-ul-Adha.” [Abu Dawood]

Regarding Eid-ul-Fitr, Rasoolullaahi (Sallallaahu Alaihi Wasallam) once said, “When the month of Ramadhaan is over, and the night of Eid-ul-Fitr has arrived, that night is called the Night of Prize. Then, in the early morning of Eid-ul-Fitr Allaahu Tha'alaa will send His angels forth to visit all the towns and cities on the earth below. Once they have made their descent, they will position themselves at the entrances to all the streets and alleys. There, in a voice that is audible to every being created by Allaahu Tha'alaa, apart from the jinn and humankind, they will issue a proclamation saying, “O Community of Muhammad (Sallallaahu Alaihi Wasallam), come forth into the presence of a Noble and Generous Lord, who will grant you gifts in abundance and forgive your terrible sin!” Then when the believers have emerged and presented themselves at their place of prayer, Allaahu Tha'alaa will say to His angels, “O My angels, what is the recompense of the hired labourer, once he has done his job?” The angels will reply, “Our Lord and our Master, You will pay him his wages in full!” So Allaahu Tha'alaa will say, “I now call upon you to bear witness, O My angels, that I have conferred My acceptance and My forgiveness as the reward for their fasting and night vigil during the month of Ramadhaan.” Allaahu Tha'alaa will then say, “O My servants put your requests to Me now, for this I swear by My Might and My Majesty, you will not ask Me this day, in this gathering of yours for anything connected with your life hereafter, without My granting it to you; nor for anything connected with your life in this lower world, without My attending to your need. By My Might and My Majesty, I will not put you to shame, nor will I expose you to disgrace amongst those who are faithfully committed to observing the laws (of Shariah). Now you may depart, knowing that you have been forgiven. You have won My approval, and I am well pleased with you.”” [Ghunyalit Taalibi Tareeqal Haq, Vol. 3]

SubhaanAllaah! How Merciful is our Rabb, even though we are such wretched sinners.

Before the advent of Eid-ul-Fitr we need to ask ourselves, “Have we reflected on whether we have respected and  honoured the month of Ramadhaan as it should be respected and honoured? Have we worshipped in it as we should have?” The final night of Ramadhaan is the night for collecting the rewards for all the goodness that was done throughout the month. If we are neglectful of Allaahu Tha'alaa on this night, then our efforts of the whole month might be ruined and will go to waste. Therefore, read the following Hadith and try to spend the last night of Ramadhaan remembering Allaahu Tha'alaa and evaluating the deeds that have been performed during the month.

The excellence of remembering Allaahu Tha'alaa on this night is reported in a Hadith in which Hazrath Abu Amamah (Radhiyallaahu 'Anh) narrates that Rasoolullaahi (Sallallaahu Alaihi Wasallam) said, “The hearts of the people who stand in prayers on the night of Eid will not die on the day when all hearts will die.” In another narration, Hazrath Mu’az bin Jabal (Radhiyallaahu 'Anh) reports that Rasoolullaahi (Sallallaahu Alaihi Wasallam) has stated, “Paradise is compulsory (Wajib) for one who stays up and worships on five nights – the nights of the 8th, 9th and 10th of Zul Hijjah, the night of Eid-ul-Fitr, and the 15th night of Shabaan.” We can therefore understand the significance of the night of Eid from these Ahadith and we should try as much as possible to busy ourselves in the remembrance of Allaahu Tha'alaa, even if it is for a portion of the night.

If we study the lives of the Companions and our pious predecessors we will see that even though they used to worship extensively in the month of Ramadhaan, they would still feel regret and sorrow on the day of Eid. They were constantly worried about the fact of whether or not they had fulfilled the rights of Ramadhaan, just as it is reported about Hazrath Umar (Radhiyallaahu 'Anh) that on the day of Eid, he sat in a corner and cried so much that his blessed beard became soaked. When people asked the reason for this, he replied, “How can a person who does not know if his fasts have been accepted celebrate Eid?” That Hazrath Umar (RadiAllaahu Ta’ala ‘Anh) about whom Rasoolullaahi (Sallallaahu Alaihi Wasallam) said that his good deeds are equivalent to the number of stars in the sky, is crying upon reflecting as to whether his fasts have been accepted or not, whether he has obeyed the orders of Almighty Allaah properly and if Allaahu Tha'alaa is pleased with them. Allaahu Akbar! And yet sinners like us are absolutely carefree and cannot wait to engage ourselves into sin again!

It was on the day of Eid-ul-Fitr that a man once entered the presence of Hazrath Ali (Radhiyallaahu 'Anh) and found him eating coarse brown bread. “Today is the day of Eid, yet here you are, eating coarse brown bread!” the man exclaimed. So Hazrath Ali (Radhiyallaahu 'Anh) replied to the visitor, saying, “Today is the day of Eid for someone whose fast has been accepted, whose effort has been deemed worthy, and whose sin has been forgiven. Today is Eid for us, and tomorrow is Eid for us. Every day in which we do not disobey Allaahu Tha'alaa is an Eid for us.”

Commenting on this incident, Huzoor Ghous-e-Azam Hazrath Shaikh Sayyid Abdul Qadir Jilani (Radhiyallaahu 'Anh) says that it is therefore important for every intelligent person to stop focusing on the external aspect, and not to let it capture his attention. His perspective on the day of Eid should be from the standpoint of contemplation and reflection.

Eid-ul-Fitr is not all about dressing up in fine new clothes, eating delicious treats and pursuing carnal pleasures and delights. In its outward celebration Eid-ul-Fitr is actually meant to symbolize the acceptance of acts of worshipful obedience; the remission of sins and mistakes; the conversion of bad deeds into good deeds; the glad tidings of promotion to higher spiritual degrees and the conferring of robes of honour, gifts and gracious favours. Eid should be celebrated, but together with celebrating it, Allaahu Tha'alaa should also be remembered. Whether there is happiness or sadness, He should never be forgotten; just as Rasoolullaahi (Sallallaahu Alaihi Wasallam) has said, “The people who will be called towards Paradise first on the Day of Judgment are those who praised Allaahu Tha'alaa during happiness and sadness.”

Lastly, on this joyous occasion we should try as much as possible to follow the beautiful Sunnah of our Beloved Rasool (Sallallaahu Alaihi Wasallam). Some of the Sunnahs are listed below, and what better way could we spend our day of Eid, than following in the footsteps of our Beloved Aaqa (Sallallaahu Alaihi Wasallam):

  • Cut the hair
  • Trim the nails
  • Have a bath (Ghusl)
  • Use a Miswaak
  • Wear nice clothes – if you have new clothes then wear new, otherwise nice clean clothes.
  • Wear an Amaama
  • Put on Itr (perfume)
  • Put Surma
  • Perform the morning prayer in the local Masjid
  • Go to the Eid Gah early
  • Pay the Sadqa-e-Fitr before the Eid Salaah
  • Walk to the Eid Gah and take a different route on the way back home.
  • Eat some dates before leaving home for the Eid Salaah (3, 5 or any amount that is an odd number). If there are no dates available, then you should eat anything sweet.
  • Express happiness, give lots of charity, go to the Eid Gah calmly, relaxed and dignified, with the gaze lowered.
May Allaahu Tha'alaa grant us the Taufeeq and Hidayat to celebrate Eid the way His pious servants celebrated it, and the Taufeeq to always stay away from sins, but especially during this Mubarak Day, Ameen.

Lailatul Qadr (The Night of Power)

The Night of Power (Lailatul Qadr) is a treasure of greatness, sanctity, excellence and magnitude. The excellences and blessings of Lailatul Qadr are so vast that only a few can be mentioned hereunder. The excellence and supremacy of this blessed night can be seen from the fact that the Allah Ta’ala revealed a complete Surah in relation to this night. He states:

“Undoubtedly, We sent it down in the blessed and valuable night. And what you know, what the blessed night is? The blessed and valuable Night is better than a thousand months. Therein descend Angels and Jibra’eel (the Spirit) by the command of their Lord for every affair. That is all peace till the rising of the dawn.” [ Al Quran : Surah Qadr ]

Rasoolullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) has stated, “Search for the Night of Power during the odd nights in the last ten nights of Ramadaan.” The opinion of most Scholars is that Lailatul Qadr is the 27th night of Ramadaan, and this is also the opinion of Imam-e-Azam Sayyiduna Imam Abu Hanifa (Radiallahu Ta’ala Anh). This night is very unique to other nights and there some signs that we can look for when looking for it. There is peace and calm in this night, the sky is jet-black, it is neither too hot nor too cold, and leaves do not fall off trees until daybreak. No barking of dogs is heard on this night and when the sun rises in the morning it appears as a disk without rays.

The reason for not knowing the exact date for the Night of Power is explained by the following Hadith. Hazrat Ubadah (Radiallahu Ta’ala Anh) reports that one day Rasoolullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) came out to inform us about the Night of Power. However, two Muslims were arguing and Rasoolullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said, “I came out to tell you which night is the Night of Power, but due to the fact that so and so were arguing this information has been lifted from me. The wisdom behind it being lifted is best known by Allah Ta’ala.” [ Bukhari Shareef ]

We see from the above Hadith that fighting and arguing with each other is such a bad deed that we were deprived of the knowledge of the Night of Power because of it.

Allama Qurtubi (Radiallahu Ta’ala Anh) quotes another narration, in which Rasoolullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) was shown the ages of the people of the previous ummaths. Upon seeing that his ummath’s lifespan was shorter than that of the previous ummaths, he was fearful that the deeds of his Ummah would not be able to compare with the deeds of the previous ummaths who had longer lives. Upon this, Allah Ta’ala granted him the Night of Power, which is better than the worship of 1000 months of the previous ummaths.

Another narration is reported by Hazrat Ali bin Urwah (Radiallahu Ta’ala Anh), who states that one day Rasoolullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) mentioned four men of the Children of Israel who worshipped Allah Ta’ala for 80 years and not a single moment in that time was spent in disobedience of Allah Ta’ala. The four who were mentioned were Hazrat Ayub, Hazrat Hizqeel, Hazrat Yoosha and Hazrat Zakariyya (Alaihimus Salaam). The Companions of Rasoolullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) were amazed upon hearing this when Hazrat Jibra’eel (Alaihis Salaam) descended from the heavens and said, “O Muhammad (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam), Your Companions are amazed at the worship of 80 years of those people? Allah Ta’ala has revealed something better than that upon you.” He then recited Surah Qadr and said, “This is better than that upon which your companions were amazed.”

Allah Ta’ala has stated in Surah Qadr that, “Therein descend Angels and Jibra’eel herein (the Spirit).” We can understand the meaning of this Aayat by looking at the Hadith in which Rasoolullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said, “On the Night of Power, Jibra’eel (Alaihis Salaam) descends onto the earth with a huge army of angels and this army of angels supplicate for forgiveness and mercy for all those people who are busy, whether standing or sitting, in the remembrance of Allah Ta’ala.”

In another Hadith, Rasoolullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) has stated, “As soon as the Night of Power has arrived, Allah Ta’ala will give the order to Hazrat Jibra’eel (Alaihis Salaam), who will promptly descend to the earth below, travelling in a throng of angels and bearing a green banner, which he will set up on top of the Ka’bah Shareef. Hazrat Jibra’eel (Alaihis Salaam) has no fewer than six hundred wings, which he only unfolds on the Night of Power. He will therefore spread them on that night, and by doing so, he will span the entire distance between the East and the West. Hazrat Jibra’eel (Alaihis Salaam) will command the angels to infiltrate into this Ummah, so they will insert themselves unobtrusively among its members. They will then give the greeting of peace to every believer who is found to be observing the night vigil, performing the ritual prayer, and practicing the remembrance of Allah. They will exchange greetings with them and say ‘Ameen’ to their Duas until the break of dawn. At this point Hazrat Jibra’eel (Alaihis Salaam) will cry out, “O company of angelic friends, now is the moment for us to be homeward bound.” The other angels will then ask, “O Jibra’eel, what has Allah done to meet the needs of the believers belonging to the Ummah of Muhammad (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam)?” So he will respond by saying, “Allah has scrutinized them carefully, and He has pardoned and forgiven them all, with only four exceptions.”” Rasoolullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) then went on to explain that the four exceptions include anyone who is consumes intoxicating liquor, anyone who is disobedient and disrespectful towards his parents, anyone who is guilty of disrupting a bond of kinship, and anyone who is virulently rancorous. When the blessed Sahaabah asked what kind of person is virulently rancorous, Rasoolullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said, “Someone who is spitefully reluctant to abandon a grudge and stubbornly unwilling to accept the restoration of good relation with anyone who has offended him.” [ Ghunyalit Taalibi Tareeqal Haq, Vol. 3 ]

It is also stated that there is an angel whose head is under the Throne (Arsh) and his feet are deep in the core of the earth. This angel has 1000 heads and each head is bigger than the world. Each head has 1000 faces, with 1000 mouths on each face and 1000 tongues in each mouth. With each tongue, he glorifies and praises the Lord in thousands of different ways, and the language of each tongue is different. When he opens his mouth all the heavenly angels fall into prostration out of fear that the brightness of his face might burn them. Every morning and night, he praises Allah Ta’ala with these mouths. This angel comes down to the earth on the Night of Power and supplicates until sunrise for the forgiveness of all the believing men and women of the Ummah of Rasoolullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) who fast. [ Tafseer Roohul Bayaan ]

It has also been stated that when Hazrat Jibra’eel (Alaihis Salaam) comes down to earth on the Night of Power, he will not leave any human being without giving him the greeting of peace and shaking him by the hand. For the recipient, the sign of this will be the sudden appearance of goose bumps all over his skin, coinciding with a surge of tender feelings in his heart, and a tearful moistening of his eyes. [ Ghunyalit Taalibi Tareeqal Haq, Vol. 3 ]

Mother of Believers, Hazrat Aisha Siddiqa (Radiallahu Ta’ala Anh) states that she asked Rasoolullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam), “If I find the Night of Power, what should I do?” Rasoolullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) replied, “Recite the following supplication: Allahumma Innaka ‘Afuwwun Tuhibbul ‘Afwa Fa’fu ‘Annee.” (O Allah! You are the One who forgives, You like to forgive, therefore forgive me) [ Tirmidhi Shareef  ]

Hazrat Abu Hurairah (Radiallahu Ta’ala Anh) narrates that Rasoolullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said, “The person who stands in prayer in the Night of Power with faith and belief has his previous sins forgiven.” [ Bukhari Shareef ; Muslim Shareef ]

It is reported in a Hadith-e-Qudsi that Allah Ta’ala states, “The sound of sinners sobbing and weeping is more beloved to Me than the sound of praise and glorification.” We can therefore see the importance of crying in the court of Allah Ta’ala and seeking His forgiveness, especially during this Blessed Night.

The person who prays 4 Rakaats on this night, and in each Rakaat recites Surah Qadr once and Surah Ikhlas 27 times after Surah Fatiha, becomes so pure of sins it is as though he was born on that day. Additionally, Allah Ta’ala grants him 1000 palaces in Paradise. Subhaanallah!

Whilst there are great benefits in staying awake and worshipping Allah Ta’ala in the night of Power, there is also great loss and harm in being lazy and neglectful about this night. Look at the damage and loss that will be incurred if we neglect to take advantage of this blessed night by remembering and worshipping Allah Ta’ala. It is stated in a Hadith that Rasoolullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) has stated, “The person who remains deprived of the blessings of this night will remain deprived of all goodness. No one is deprived of the blessings of this night except the most wretched ones.” [ Ibn Majah ]

The above Hadith makes clear that we should not be negligent and heedless in the Night of Power. Rather we should prepare ourselves completely for worshipping on this night because the Merciful Lord, through the Sadaqa of His Beloved Rasool (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) grants the reward of worshipping for more than a thousand months for just a few hours worship. Very unfortunate are those people who are not prepared to sacrifice a few hours to worship their Lord.

May Allah Ta’ala grant us the Taufeeq and Hidayat to take full advantage of Lailatul Qadr and to make as much Ibaadat as possible and to cry in the Court of Allah Ta’ala and to beg for His Mercy and Forgiveness through the Wasilah of His Habeeb, our Master, Muhammad Mustafa Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam, Ameen.

Punctuality in the Salaah of A’la Hazrat Imam Ahle Sunnat Imam Ahmad Raza Khan(Radiallahu Ta’ala Anhu)

Our Beloved Rasool (Sallallaahu Alaihi Wasallam) ordered his followers to safeguard and be punctual with their Salaah, and he showed the world in practical terms by acting upon this himself. Rasoolullaahi (Sallallaahu Alaihi Wasallam) performed each Salaah with congregation, on time, with his Companions. A’la Hazrath Imam Ahle Sunnat Ash Shah Imam Ahmed Raza Khan (Radhiyallaahu 'Anh) was a true devotee and follower of Rasoolullaahi (Sallallaahu Alaihi Wasallam) and that is why he repeated the words that were spoken by Rasoolullaahi (Sallallaahu Alaihi Wasallam), and he performed the same actions that were performed by Rasoolullaahi (Sallallaahu Alaihi Wasallam). Every step of the way, he was an embodiment of one who acts upon the sayings and teachings of Nabi-e-Kareem (Sallallaahu Alaihi Wasallam), and that was the reason why he never missed performing his Salaah on time, just as the following incidents show.

In the year 1337 A.H., corresponding to 1919, even though he was ill, A’la Hazrath (Radhiyallaahu 'Anh) travelled to Jabalpur at the invitation of Hazrath Maulana Abdus Salaam (Rahmathullaahi 'Alaih). The following is described by Hazrath Burhan-e-Millat (Rahmathullaahi 'Alaih):

“At 4 am, A’la Hazrath (Radhiyallaahu 'Anh) and this attendant left by car and headed for Bareilly railway station. I said, “Sir, the train departs right at the time of Fajr Salaah, where will we pray our Salaah?” He smiled and replied, “Insha Allaah, on the platform.” When we got to the station, we found out that the train was going to be 40 minutes late. Prayer mats, cloths etc. were laid down on the platform and many people performed the Fajr Salaah behind A’la Hazrath (Radhiyallaahu 'Anh). It was a miracle (Karaamat) of A’la Hazrath (Radhiyallaahu 'Anh) that we were all able to perform the Salaah in peace without having to rush for fear of missing our train.”

Hazrath Maulana Abdus Salaam (Rahmathullaahi 'Alaih) had come with his companions to Katni to meet and accompany A’la Hazrath (Radhiyallaahu 'Anh) the rest of the way, and he describes the rest of the incident:

“The train reached Katni at 4 am. Arrangements were made for A’la Hazrath (Radhiyallaahu 'Anh) to perform ablution and he asked, “Where will we perform Fajr Salaah?” I said, “In Sulaimanabad Insha Allaah, but the train only stops there for three minutes. Sir, you perform ablution, your attendant is here to serve you.” I walked towards the engine and saw that the driver was a Muslim who had just come from greeting A’la Hazrath (Radhiyallaahu 'Anh). He greeted me and shook my hand. I said to him, “We have to perform Salaah in Sulaimanabad.” He asked, “How long will it take?” I replied, “12-15 minutes.” He said, “I will delay the train.” I also met with the guard and he also assured us that we could perform our Salaah at Sulaimanabad. The train reached Sulaimanabad on time and the prayer mats, cloths etc. were laid down on the platform. Approximately 300 people prayed Fajr Salaah behind A’la Hazrath (Radhiyallaahu 'Anh). All the other passengers on the train were watching A’la Hazrath (Radhiyallaahu 'Anh), who prayed his Wazeefas calmly and peacefully after the Salaah and then proceeded back onto the train.”

Hazrath Burhan-e-Millat (Rahmathullaahi 'Alaih) also noted and wrote that during his stay in Jabalpur, A’la Hazrath (Radhiyallaahu 'Anh) would walk to the Mosque to perform all five daily Salaah with the congregation. In those days, Hazrath Burhan-e-Millat (Rahmathullaahi 'Alaih) used to perform his prayers in a Mosque, which was more than 500 feet away from his home. This is not a short walk for one who is sick, frail and thin; rather it exceeds the amount that a person who is sick would be able to walk. After returning back from Jabalpur, on the 22nd Rajab 1337 A.H., A’la Hazrath (Radhiyallaahu 'Anh) sent the following message to Hazrath Burhan-e-Millat (Rahmathullaahi 'Alaih):

“I arrived back in Bareilly safely on Monday at 8 pm. I received a great blessing from Allaahu Tha'alaa along the way because I thought I would miss my Maghrib Salaah. The train was scheduled to arrive at Shahbahanpur at 6.33 and was only scheduled to stop there for 8 minutes. Based on that schedule, it would not be time for Maghrib Salaah yet. However, the train arrived 15 minutes late at Shahbahanpur and stayed there for over 10 minutes. Alhamdulillah, all my prayers were performed peacefully and on time during the journey. Many people had come to the station to welcome me back and I reached home quite late. This faqeer first went to the mosque and performed Esha Salaah with the congregation.”

This is a true Aashiq and follower of the Beloved Prophet (Sallallaahu Alaihi Wasallam). Upon returning home after spending one and a quarter months away, instead of rushing home to meet his children and family, first of all he goes to the House of Allaahu Tha'alaa. His thought was that ‘I do not want to miss the congregation amidst all the excitement of seeing my children again.’ This is called safeguarding Salaah, and this is having enthusiasm and passion for prostrating and worshipping Allaahu Tha'alaa. The following incident further illustrates the passion and zest with which A’la Hazrath (Radhiyallaahu 'Anh) performed his Salaah.

A’la Hazrath (Radhiyallaahu 'Anh) travelled for his second pilgrimage at the age of 52. After the rights of Hajj were fulfilled, he became so ill that he was confined to a bed for almost two months. When he had recovered and was better, he left Makkah Shareef to visit the blessed resting place of Rasoolullaahi (Sallallaahu Alaihi Wasallam) on the 24th of Safar 1334 A.H. He went to Jeddah and travelled by boat to Raabig and, from there, completed the journey to Madinah Shareef on camel. The following is an account of what happened, in the words of A’la Hazrath (Radhiyallaahu 'Anh) himself:

“Along the way, we got to Peer Shaikh and there were only a few miles left to reach our destination, but there was only a short time left for performing Fajr Salaah. The camel owners wanted to continue until we reached our destination, but the time for Fajr would have passed by that time. My companions and I got down from our camels. We had a bucket for pulling water from the well but did not have a rope, and the well was quite deep. We tied our turbans to the bucket, drew the water, performed ablution and, by the Grace of Allaahu Tha'alaa, we were able to perform our Salaah on time. Now the worry was that after only just recovering from a long illness, how would I be able to walk the long distance that was left to our destination? I turned my head and was shocked to see an African camel owner whom I did not recognise, who was waiting for me with a camel. I praised Allaahu Tha'alaa and got on the camel. People asked me, “Why did you come on this camel? Shaikh Hussain has told us very forcefully to ensure that we did not fall short at all in serving you.” We proceeded a little further and I saw that the original camel owner was waiting with the camel on which I had been riding. I asked him why he was waiting there and he said, “When the leader of our group stopped for a rest, I thought to myself that you will have to endure difficulties if you have to walk all the way, therefore I released the camel and headed back to where you were.” All this was a great blessing from my Beloved Master Muhammad Mustafa (Sallallaahu Alaihi Wasallam) because neither have I ever met nor do I know Shaikh Hussain or the African camel owner.”

SubhaanAllaah! This is what is called enthusiasm and eagerness to perform Salaah. Just the thought of missing the Salaah at its allocated time makes one restless and uneasy. If the Salaah is prayed on time, the heart feels content and peaceful and the soul gets new life. Even after being severely ill for months and being very weak, he did not care about all the problems and was prepared to leave the group and put up with any amount of difficulties, but was not willing to give up performing Salaah on time. A true lover and devotee of Rasoolullaahi (Sallallaahu Alaihi Wasallam) considers Salaah as a great blessing, and thanks Allaahu Tha'alaa for granting him this great gift. May our lives be sacrificed in trying to achieve the zest and passion that A’la Hazrath (Radhiyallaahu 'Anh) had for performing Salaah and prostrating to Almighty Allaah, our Cherisher and Sustainer. Ameen.

Noor-e-Muhammadi [ The Light of Muhammad(Sallallaahu Alaihi Wasallam) ]

It is evident from numerous Ahadith that the first thing that Allaahu Tha'alaa created was the Noor-e-Muhammadi or the Light of Muhammad (Sallallaahu Alaihi Wasallam). Rasoolullaahi (Sallallaahu Alaihi Wasallam) has stated in the Hadith, “Awwalu ma Khalaq Allaahu Noori,” i.e. the first thing Allaah created was my Noor. [Madaarijun Nubuwwah, Vol 2]

It is stated in the Holy Qur’an, “No one is associated to Him, so I have been commanded and I am the first Muslim.” [Surah 6, Verse 163

The Sahaabah asked Rasoolullaahi (Sallallaahu Alaihi Wasallam) to explain the phrase “I am the first Muslim” in this verse, as Hazrath Adam (Alaihis Salaam) and the other Prophets up to Hazrath Isa (Alaihis Salaam) were born on earth before him, and all these Prophets were Muslims i.e. they surrendered to the will of Allaah, so how could Rasoolullaahi (Sallallaahu Alaihi Wasallam) be the first Muslim? It was then that Rasoolullaahi (Sallallaahu Alaihi Wasallam) explained that Allaahu Tha'alaa had created him as Noor-e-Muhammadi out of Himself many thousands of astronomical years before Allaahu Tha'alaa decided to create the universe. Rasoolullaahi (Sallallaahu Alaihi Wasallam) has also stated, “I am the first Prophet to be created and the last one to be sent.”

The creation of Noor-e-Muhammadi was just as if you take up a bucket of water from the vast oceans, and find no difference whatsoever in the quantity of water in the oceans, or with one candle you light another and the former does not lose any of its light, whilst the next candle is kindled. Similarly, the creation of Noor-e-Muhammadi by Allaahu Tha'alaa made not the least difference or shortage in any way in Allaah, Who continued to remain His Infinite Self. It is ever so easy for Allaahu Tha'alaa to create whatsoever He wishes.

Now let us consider what would happen if one were to pour the water lifted in the bucket from the vast ocean onto the seashore? One would surely see that the water from the bucket will try to flow back into the ocean mass from which it has been separated. Thus also was the case with Noor-e-Muhammadi. It prostrated itself before its Creator in an effort to reach Him from Whom it emanated. This was the first prostration before Allaahu Tha'alaa and it pleased the Lord so much that it is said He enjoyed this adoration for 3,202,009,900,000 years. After this long period He was satisfied with this and He thought of developing a creation out of the Noor-e-Muhammadi. [Tafrihul Askia Fil Ahwalul Ambia, Vol 1]

Hazrath Abu Hurairah (Radhiyallaahu 'Anh) has narrated: “The Holy Prophet (Sallallaahu Alaihi Wasallam) once asked Hazrath Jibraeel (Alaihis Salaam): “How old are you?” Hazrath Jibra’eel (Alaihis Salaam) replied, “I don’t have much recollection about the exact age. However, I do remember seeing a star in the fourth Hijab (veil) of Honour. That star would appear once every seventy thousand years, and I have seen the star seventy two thousand times.” Upon hearing this, the Holy Prophet (Sallallaahu Alaihi Wasallam) replied: “I swear by the Honour of my Allaah Jalla Jalaaluhu that star was me.” [Tarikh-ul-Kabir; Tafseer Roohul Bayan]

Allaahu Tha'alaa could very well have created the universe by ordering “Be!” [Surah 3, Verse 59], but to honour His beloved Noor-e-Muhammadi, He decided to create the entire universe through this medium and bless everything thus created for the sake of His beloved. In a Hadith-e-Qudsi Allaahu Tha'alaa has stated, “If I had not created you (O Muhammad), I would not have created anything.” Accordingly, Allaahu Tha'alaa started devising out of Noor-e-Muhammadi each and every one of the angels, the countless galaxies throughout the universe and all that is therein. Thus He honoured His beloved. Nothing that was created by Allaahu Tha'alaa was out of anything else.

Because every creation was devised out of the Noor-e-Muhammadi, it is this Noor-e-Muhammadi that is the life of every creation, without which life will cease to exist. It is for this reason that the whole of creation ceased functioning and time came to a standstill on the night that Nabi-e-Kareem (Sallallaahu Alaihi Wasallam) went for Me’raj to meet his Creator, because he is the life of creation itself and everything in it.

It is for this reason that A’la Hazrath Imam Ahle Sunnat Imam Ahmad Raza Khan (Radhiyallaahu 'Anh) writes:
Wo Jo Na The Tho Kuch Na Tha
Wo Jo Na Ho Tho Kuch Na Ho
Jaan He Wo Jahan Ki
Jaan He Tho Jahan He
When he (Rasoolullaahi Sallallaahu Alaihi Wasallam) did not exist then nothing existed
If he was not created then nothing would have been created
He is the life of the world
He is alive therefore the world exists

Hazrath Jabir bin Abdullah Ansari (Radhiyallaahu 'Anh) reports: I asked, “Ya Rasoolullaahi (Sallallaahu Alaihi Wasallam) may my father and mother be sacrificed upon thee! Tell me, what was that which the Almighty Allaah created before anything else?” The Holy Prophet (Sallallaahu Alaihi Wasallam) replied:

“O Jabir, verily Allaah first created my Noor (Light) from His Noor before He created anything else. This Noor stayed in obedience according to the Will of Allaah. At that time, there was neither the Lawh (Divine Tablet) nor the Qalam (Pen), neither heaven nor hell, and neither any angel, earth, skies, sun, moon, jinn or human beings. When Allaah wished to create something, He divided that Noor into four parts. From one part He created the Qalam (Pen), from the second, the Lawh (Divine Tablet) and from the third, He made the Arsh (Throne).

He divided the fourth part into a further four parts. From the first He created those Angels who carry the Arsh, from the second the Kursi (Divine Chair), and from the third, He created the rest of the Angels.

He again divided the remaining parts into a further four parts. From the first He created the skies, from the second He created the planets and from the third He created heaven and hell.

Once again, He divided the fourth part into a further four parts. From the first part He created the Noor with which the believer (Mu’min) sees. From the second, He created in the hearts of the Believers the Noor of Ma’rifat (spiritual realisation). From the third, He created a Noor in the tongues of the Believers to recite the Kalima-e-Shahaadat, Laa Ilaaha IllAllaah Muhammadur Rasoolullaahi Sallallaahu Alaihi Wasallam. (And from the fourth part everything else was created).” [Dalaa'il-un-Nubuwwah; Muwaahibul Laduniya; Ibne Majah]

Since all created beings and objects have come out of the same single source, it is but natural that all creation can reach their goal only through this source i.e. Noor-e-Muhammadi. Therefore Rasoolullaahi (Sallallaahu Alaihi Wasallam), who is the most sublime and exalted of all that has been created, is the medium through which every person would reach his Creator.

Imam Fakhruddin Raazi (Radhiyallaahu 'Anh) writes in Tafseer-e-Kabeer that when Hazrath Adam (Alaihis Salaam) was created, the angels were ordered to prostrate to him for the reason that the Noor-e-Muhammadi was in Hazrath Adam’s (Alaihis Salaam) forehead. Iblees could not see the light and boasted why he should prostrate to a human. As a result of this he became shaitaan, the accursed. The angels saw the light and they all prostrated.

From this incident there is a great lesson to be learnt, especially in this day and age. In the same way that Iblees refused to respect Hazrath Adam (Alaihis Salaam) by saying he was ‘just a human’ because he could not see the Noor-e-Muhammadi, there are corrupt sects like the Wahaabis who say that our beloved Rasool (Sallallaahu Alaihi Wasallam) is ‘just a human’ and he is not Noor. From this we can obviously see whose followers they are, and we must stay as far away as possible from these corrupt people who are out to snatch our Imaan away from us.

Rasoolullaahi (Sallallaahu Alaihi Wasallam) is supreme with regard to dignity and rank amongst all creation. He is the Noor which guides the entire creation to Almighty Allaah. It is clearly evident how unique the position of our Beloved Aaqa Muhammad Mustafa (Sallallaahu Alaihi Wasallam), the Mahboob of the Almighty Creator is, in whose honour the entire universe has been created. His reality is thus known only to his Creator, Almighty Allaah.

All Praise be to Allaah that through His creation of Noor-e-Muhammadi not only we human beings, but all other creation came into existence and that through His Infinite Mercy He made us the Ummatis of His Mahboob, the light of existence, Hazrath Muhammad Mustafa (Sallallaahu Alaihi Wasallam). May we die as the slaves of Rasoolullaahi (Sallallaahu Alaihi Wasallam) and may we rise on the day of Qiyaamah amongst the Aashiqe Rasool (Sallallaahu Alaihi Wasallam), Ameen.
